Starting Your Fitness Routine

Starting Your Fitness Routine

Monday, April 18th, 2011

  • Starting a fitness routine can reduce your risks for obesity, heart disease and cancer; according to the Mayo Clinic. Follow certain fitness routines each day. Practicing them may help reduce weight and raise self-esteem. If you understand your fitness goals, this will help you design a program that meets your fitness needs.

Time

  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that you should complete at least two and a half hours of moderate exercise or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous exercise each week. Vigorous exercise relates to any activity in which your body works so hard that you cannot talk. With moderate exercise, it’s difficult to hold a conversation.

Find a Fun Activity

  • Finding an activity you enjoy will help you stick with it, according to The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Play sports, try rock climbing with friends or go out dancing. If you prefer working out by yourself; go hiking, snowboarding or swimming. Keep looking until you find an activity that you find enjoyable.

Stretch

  • Stretching can help increase flexibility and provide stress relief. Doing so after you exercise will help balance your body, according to the Mayo Clinic. Make sure to breathe while practicing stretching exercises. The stretching should cause tension, but if you feel pain, you have stretched too much.

Create a Workout Schedule

  • Creating a workout schedule will help you remain committed to your fitness program. Write down what you want to do for exercise each day and what time you will do it. Put this on your calendar like a regular appointment. This will remind you of your commitment and help you turn exercise into a habit.

Take a Class

  • Taking a class will keep your exercise routine from getting boring. Many gyms offer regular classes, such as kickboxing, spinning and weight training. If you do not want to join a gym, you can buy a punchcard with a specific number of classes on it. Your card will be marked each time you use it. Many locations offer this option for yoga, karate, rock climbing and dancing. You may also meet people who enjoy the same fitness activities you do.
